We are nearing Christmas and December seems to be streaming by. This year feels a bit more crazy and busy. I think it's my very busy work that has added to the hecticness and not the enjoyment and celebrations we are trying to ensure happens.

Speaking of enjoyment, we did go on our annual tree cutting day at the end of November. It was a beautiful in the foothills. Hard to believe the ground was covered in snow last year when we went up.

We are enjoying this Christmas season and praying for continued Peace in our hearts as we reflect on Christ, God's own son!

Fall is here

I am so seriously behind on blogging so I'm not going to attempt to catch up right now. Fall is upon us and that means so many things in our house. Ava Lu started 1st grade, soccer season is in full swing and a busy busy time for me at work with our annual Care Begins with Me event. Ava Lu and daddy stopped by the event this year to see the fruit of mommy's many hours at work. It was a great event. Abby Rike from The Biggest Loser was our keynote speaker. What an amazing night.

This is my 4th year of planning this event. What a blessing to work on such an amazing women's event! This year was truly our best year. The last photo is me with my boss, Jill and colleague Robin at the end of the night. We were pooped but somehow refreshed!

Swim team

This is Ava Lu's second year on swim team and oh it is so much fun! She is improving with each week, lesson, practice and meet. What's most important is that she is enjoying it thoroughly.

I love the dedication, focus and spirit in which she brings to this sport. She's a tiny mite and we are soooo proud of her. She may be the smallest on the 6 and unders (and she's 6) but she has all the heart.

Celebrating America - Happy 4th of July

It's always an honor to celebrate our Great Country and the Freedom we have as Americans. We got to celebrate it for four days this year. I only took a few pictures of Ava Lu on my phone (which are not the best quality) but I can't help but capture her in red, white and blue.

The first day we went to a neighborhood block party. It's a fun night that our association plans. . . filled with activities for the children and a fireworks show. We met up with our CG neighborhood friends for such a great night kicking off our 4th of July festivities.

The second day we went to our Cabana Club. They plan a celebration each year at the pool and the night ends with another great fireworks show! We had friends join us at this fun night as well. We are blessed by such wonderful friends in the neighborhood.

The third day was our 4th of July celebration at church. It was a great service but the treat for me was the parade at the end with all the children carrying festive 4th of July handmade flags, stars, etc. The tears were flowing. . . I will was reminded of how blessed we are that God sent us all the way to China to fulfill his promise of our daughter and to see her proudly celebrating America is just something I hope that I never take for granted. We enjoyed a BBQ and then another trip to the pool.

Today was actually 4th of July and we spent the day with my mom joining us. . . relaxing a bit with a matinee and then a BBQ at the pool (again).

I am thankful to God for our freedom, our great land and my amazing family.

I am truly proud to be an American!

Easter. . . a joyous celebration!

Easter is such an amazing time of celebration and emotion for me. I am so thankful for Jesus and his love for us. This year, Ava Lu sang in an Easter choir at church for the first time. I was extra celebratory and emotional!

We had a wonderful day with family and celebrating the risen Lord!

Ava Lu's mommy did it!

So, given this blog is really about Ava Lu and not me, I first had to show the poster she made for me as she and her daddy stood on the sidelines to cheer me on at my first and hopefully not last, half marathon.

I am so blessed. She told me that she could see me on the big TV when I crossed the finish line and that "I won." She told me I was the best mommy ever at the half marathon. So sweet! I told her that she makes me "win" with her unconditional love for me.

So, here's to believing in what we never thought we could accomplish. . . and to the sweetest little cheerleader in the world!

Christmas blessings

We had a very nice Christmas. Celebrating with family and then a wonderful trip to the Happiest Place on Earth. It truly was a special season filled with Joy.

Ava Lu was even the star in the Christmas play at church!Family Christmas in Salinas with the cousins. And, Santa Claus made a special visit with gifts for all the children. Ava Lu received a little kitten in a purple purse. It's a treasured gift for her.

Christmas Eve day. . . Ava Lu's first trip to Disneyland. We were so happy to be there to experience the extra Christmas magic that Disney brings.

On Christmas morning with her Santa gift of the panda bear pillow pet. Then, off to Disneyland again for Christmas breakfast with the characters!

Still feeling the joy of the season and thankful for the Savior who was born on Christmas morning!

Just the word Christmas makes me smile. The celebration of Christ's birth, the beauty and magic in the air and the excitement in my little girl's voice when she hears a familiar Christmas tune. I'm blessed to celebrate the JOY of Christmas this year!

We've already seen quite a bit of snow in our travels to the foothills and the sierras. Such a treat.

Speaking of Christmas, I'm excited to create our Christmas cards this year on Shutterfly. They have such beautiful designs --- the Pretty Poinsetta Print, the Family Wall Red, the Cranberry Swirl and the With Love Chartreuse are all so elegant and fun with a touch of sweetness. I'll probably pick one of the designs with a collage opportunity given we do not have a "hero" shot of our little family. . . this way we can add a number of photos for a touch of whimsy and Fortik flair!

I've also always wanted to create annual photo books of Ava Lu's memories and journey for each year. Shutterfly have some lovely options so I think this is the year I'll do that as well! The finished product is quite lovely from others' that I've seen.

So in the spirit of a Christmas wish and a smile, I hope when you receive our Christmas card with our smiling faces, you'll feel the warmth of our love for the season and for this life we've been blessed to live.

Fall fun

I can't believe it's already mid-November. This has been a busy fall season. Ava Lu started school, played soccer, enjoyed our annual pumpkin-hunting trip, dressed up as Ariel for Halloween and lived life with full ambition.

She's beautiful on the inside and out - and growing in ALL ways each day. It's amazing to see.

Kindergarten

It's official - Ava Lu is a kindergartener! She is loving life in Mrs. Delsol's class and all the learning. In fact, my mom's neighbor asked her yesterday if she had a good day at school and if she learned anything. Ava's response was, "of course, I learn something EVERY DAY!"

Here are a few of her first day of kindergarten pictures. Isn't she the cutest? So, confident, yet small and sweet! This last one was after the first day of school on the porch swing. Doesn't she look tuckered out?

Summer snapshot

We have had a great summer. I took three weeks off - one in each month: June, July and August. I loved it. . . time filled with precious memories.

The first week off featured a girls road trip with my mom and Ava Lu. We went down to see my other favorite girls in the world - my cousins in Salinas which included a trip to Monterey and an overnight get-a-way in Santa Cruz. We ended the week with a three-day celebration of the 4th of July.

The second week off was filled with Tahoe fun: Jim, Ava Lu and I love our time on Moon Dunes beach and all our other annual trip traditions!

The third week was this last week: my birthday week and the week before Ava Lu started Kindergarten. I was so thankful for the quality time with my girlie. And, of course, all the treats, gifts, lunches out and pool time with my darling hubby, mom and friends.
Summer time is my favorite time - cherries to eat, BBQ's to share, tomatoes in the garden AND all the holiday weekends, lazy long days, summer mornings. . . filled with fun, love and frolicking. Michelle

Meeting Kindergarden teacher, Mrs. Delsol

Today was a big day in our house. . . . we met Ava Lu's kindergarden teacher, Mrs. Delsol. It was very nice, they held an orientation for all the children so they'd know their seat, place in line, cubby/art box and all the other fun things in the kindergarden room.

Ava Lu was so excited to meet "Mrs. Delsol." She'd been working on saying her name for the last few days so she was ready for the introduction and orientation day! One of the coolest things is that when she saw Ava Lu for the first time, she looked Ava Lu in the eyes and said, "Ava Lu. . . I was wanting to see the little girl who had this special name." I was so blessed by the level of engagement at their first meeting.

I have mixed emotions about kindergarden - my baby girl is growing up but it's always so amazing to see Ava Lu enter into a new journey/moment. She has such a love for life. We're just so blessed to live life along side her as her parents.

While I have so many summer photos to post to get caught up, I had to post something today about this fun and milestone day!

Spring, Birthday and Summer!

I can't believe all the time that has passed since my last post. It's been a busy few months with Spring, two bouts of the flu in the house, Ava Lu's birthday extravaganza, swim meets, a dance recital and the beginnings of summer.

Here a few photos of what's been going on with us via the life of Ava Lu!

Ava Lu's 5th birthday party. We had a wonderful princess who came to the party and created such beautiful face painting designs on all the children. The birthday girl went first and had a beautiful butterfly face. It was a wonderful party and such fun celebrating our precious girl.

Ava Lu's swim meets. Here a few snapshots of her very first meet. Can you say "natural star." She did amazing!

And, end of the year preschool celebrations. Spring sing, waving at mommy, daddy and Nana!

While we were up in Tahoe for a few days, a San Fran Chronicle photographer captured Ava Lu for his front page story on the water levels and spring snow in CA!

How fun was it for her daddy to go to the store to purchase a paper and see his precious girl right on the frontpage. Full color, above the fold. When Ava Lu makes a debut into news, she goes right to the top :).

Travel group get together - 3rd anniversary!

We celebrated Ava Lu day last week and our third anniversary. Here's just a sneak preview from part of the celebrations. These are from our travel group get together for Dim Sum in the Bay Area. It was so much fun to see the girls and parents.

The girls are all such beauties - inside and out!

I'm behind on 2010 posts so I thought I'd go back to New Year's Eve when we spend time celebrating with our dear friends, Dan, Melinda, Eliza and Maggie, Liam and Sam.

Ava Lu loves Maggie, Liam and Sam so much. Here they are in their jammies at the party! They are a little tired but still having fun.

As I began 2010, I was reminded of how this will be the first calendar year without my precious dad. I was struck with the thought of "how will I make it without you, daddy." I am thankful for my heavenly Father who I will trust in to carry me through all the firsts without my precious daddy-of-the heart to be here with me. I know that each day will be a step of faith. I will strive to remember the faithfulness of God in giving me a loving, dad like him.

The first time I saw your face. . . . .

We received our referral packet with photos three years ago today. We got to see Ava Lu's face for the first time. There was instant love for the face of our precious girl! It's a day that we will never forget.

Three years later the fulfillment of promise and our relationship of love with Ava Lu grows each day. Ava Lu brightens up a room. She is a gifted little girl with such a gift of touching the hearts of people. She is an amazing blessing and daughter.

On that day three years ago we knew our lives would never be the same. I love you, Ava Lu Lu!

Papa

This fall and winter have been such tough ones, losing my precious daddy and Ava Lu's adoring Papa on Oct. 31. I've gone silent in my blogging as our hearts have focused on how we will now pick up the pieces and live on each day without our favorite, favorite man in the whole world.

I thought it would be fitting to post a few pictures of Papa before resuming our normal chronicling of Ava Lu's life! He was her love as they played "Cinderella and the glass slipper" almost every day together. We miss Papa and continue to honor his role and place in our lives.

Apple Hill 2009

We went on our annual Apple Hill trip a few weeks back. It's always such fun. Ava Lu makes it funner and funner every year.

We did the little petting "zoo" of llamas and goats at Denver Dan's, pumpkin picking at O'Halloran's, lunch at Bodhaine's, pony rides and hay maze at Apple Ridge Farms AND, last, but not least, dessert/pie at Grandpa's Cellar. Yum yum.

I need to post the rest of our pictures from the other camera. We captured lots of moments of Ava Lu enjoying the day.

It's always so nice to have an Apple Hill day of fun!

Seasons

It is clearly fall (some winter weather this week too here in Sac). I'm working on transitioning summer clothes from closets and drawers to make room for fall and winter clothes. Clearly Ava Lu has grown these past few months so going through the clothes takes a bit more time.

Nana's 70th B-day

We had a wonderful time in July celebrating my mom's (Ava Lu's Nana) 70th birthday with dear family. She was so blessed by all those who came from out of town to mark this wonderful milestone. Here are a few shots to show the flavor of the weekend!The girl cousins by the pool.

Tahoe 2009

We continued our Tahoe summer tradition again this year and had a wonderful time.

Ava Lu swam in the lake, thanks to her swim lessons earlier this summer! But truly her favorite beach pastime remains digging in the sand which she did daily.

It was a great week away. We went to concerts on the beach and golf course, enjoyed slow relaxing dinners and even snuck in a nap or two. The icing on the cake was when Ava Lu looked up at me on the lawn swing one night as the moon was shining and said, "mama, I'm having a wonderful time on vacation with you and daddy."

In our hearts, that's what it's all about.

Vacation Bible School

Ava Lu went to her first "day camp" a few weeks ago - Vacation Bible School at a local church. I think I was more nervous about leaving her than she was about staying. She did very well and attended all five days!

Two of her buddies from school - Emma & Katelyn - were there and they had a good time. She's now singing "Father Abraham" and "Let my people go!" I'm thrilled to have God's word planted in her heart even in little steps.

It's fun to hear her now talk about her "Bible School."

Canoe Trip

These pictures are from Father's Day. Jim's choice for Father's Day was to go on a canoe trip for at Lake Natoma in Folsom. Here is Ava Lu during our break on the shore. She truly loves the water and playing on the shore.

It was such a nice day to be on the lake/river. We even fed a family of ducks while we were on the water. Ava Lu squealed with excitement at all the new discoveries!

Cousins!

Our niece Bianca graduated from high school in June. She is an amazing young woman! We enjoyed a family lunch celebration.

Ava Lu loves her cousins Bianca and Danielle. They are three beautiful girls - inside and out! We know that God's hand is on all of their lives and trust that He is ordering Bianca's steps even now into this next season of her life.

Ava Lu is really taking to playing dress up. She was in her room and came out with this lovely mixture of pink, purple and ribbons - perfectly adorned. She then thought her outfit was perfect for riding and playing in the backyard.

Ava Lu's friend Jack

Ava Lu has a little friend - Jack - who lives down the street. He is just one of the many who she yells out to when we pass by their house (as I'm trying to breathe, jog and steer the jog stroller all at the same time - not wanting to draw attention to me as I'm panting by). But, she truly hopes to catch a glimpse of her little friend - just to say hi with such glee, preferably stop to play for a bit or to be so excited by knowing and loving others!

The moral of the story here is that Ava Lu loves her friends. It's such a blessing to see her play, laugh and connect with these little people. I am blessed by her undying love for people and friendship - a reminder to me daily of what's important: people.

So, here's a little reminder to take time out to stop and play!

My biggest cheerleaders

Last weekend I ran in my first 5K after participating in a training program. I ran 2 of the miles and that was a HUGE accomplishment for me. Below is a picture with Jessica - my training buddy and much younger team member from work!

My two biggest cheerleaders were waiting at the finish line for me ----- with a balloon, flowers, card and cheering with a Dora whistle.

It's so amazing to have the unconditional love of my daughter and husband.

Preschool promotion

Ava Lu had her 1st year preschool promotion program last night. She was sunshine on a stick (to use one of my friend Kim's sayings) on the stage singing her songs with the class - with such excitement, exuberance and life!

Her little hat kept falling off - my fault, I made it too small. I'll do better next year baby girl, I promise!
I sat on the front row with tears in my eyes - tears of joy and amazement: I am so blessed to be this little jewel's mommy!

Today is our precious girl's 4th birthday. I can't believe how time flies.

We had a fabulous party on Saturday with 26 children and 30 adults -- and Snow White.

Today Ava Lu celebrated at preschool with cookies for her friends and then out for Sushi with mommy & daddy (Sushi was her pick!).

My cousin, Kari, graduated with her Master's Degree last weekend. The best part is that the ceremony was in Sacramento so they came up to see us and we got to be part of the celebration. Such fun!

Easter beauty

We had such a wonderful Easter weekend. Lots of fun at egg hunts, a great church service and special time with family! I love the picture of Ava Lu and Nana - my two favorite girls.

Snow fun

We went up to T*hoe for the day/night and oh such fun. Ava Lu experienced her first snow fall. She was unfazed by the flakes and really was most interested in sledding and romping around in the icy white stuff.

Our precious girlie squealed in delight with each fun sled ride, as if it was her first ride ever! I was reminded of how we should enjoy and live - like each experience was our first ever.

It was a glorious day and night away in such a beautiful, magical place! A much needed break of "fun" for Ava Lu, Jim and I.

Two years ago today. . . we had good news!

Two years ago today we had good news from a distant land! Our referral call for Ava Lu came in. I can still remember the phone ringing as I sat at my desk in the office. As the woman from our agency read over all of Jiang Mei Yu's vital details - my heart pitter pattered, I knew the promise of our girl had come to pass.

It's hard to imagine that was two years ago. Time has flown - and we are blessed more than ever. Here she is today - posing after a long day of fun, just for mommy.

Out with the old, in with the new (2008 & 2009)

We had a wonderful New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

We took Ava Lu out for french food on New Year's Eve and then to watch the very first West Coast ball drop. She made it up past midnight (of course, a late nap really helped). She is truly a party girl. Next year if we go out we have to buy her a New Year's hat and noisemaker. She was very enthralled with all the festivities. She told us she needed a "happy birthday hat to wear in the marching parade." We just love her!

And, we took a trip up to Tahoe for New Year's Day - played in the snow, sledded and had a car-picnic. Ava Lu was just squealing in delight as she played and rode the sled. Again, what a blessing to share in her new experiences.

Christmas memories

Ava Lu enjoyed the joyous Christmas season so much this year. She had her own tree and Nativity in her room. Here's Ava Lu in her Christmas jammies ready for her goodnight story time with mommy - one of my favorite times of the day!

And, I was able to capture a few photos of her enjoying Christmas morning. You can see she had just a few gifts to open (mostly due to the generosity of family - daddy and I were very good about not overspending this year :)).

As we count our Christmas blessings, our Daughter of Promise reminding us of the true meaning of Emmanuel - God With Us is the best gift of all.

Ava Lu's "camera debut"

Ava Lu participated in a commercial photo shoot last week for ads for my company. I wasn't sure how she'd do since she's not always been the best at posing for photos. But, she was really just an accessory for this shoot - the "model grandaughter" for our hired grandma/senior woman who was the focus of the shoot. And, these photos are very lifestyle in nature and given that Ava is great at life I thought she'd do well. She did!

Here are a few of the photos from the shoot. She didn't really care for the large ducks! You can see in one photo she was saying "enough"with her expression! Nonetheless, I was a very proud mommy. She's my precious girl

Pumpkin Farm Field Trip

Ava Lu's first field trip was last week. Went went to a local pumpkin farm. Okay, how many preschools can you fit in one pumpkin farm? There were hundreds of little ones all over the place - in the corn maze, slide on hay bales, a little farm of animals and, of course, pumpkins.

I can't download my camera's photos for some reason but Alison (mommy to Michelle & Stephany - twins who are sooooo cute) sent me this photo of Ava Lu and her friends, Michelle & Stephany, from the trip. She loves her little twin friends! Thanks for sharing the photo, Alison!

I'll post more photos from her trip once I get my camera to cooperate!

Pumpkins!

Each year we head up to Apple Hill in the CA foothills to cut our very own pumpkins. This year was filled with pumpkins, sun and harvest fun (code for AMAZING APPLE PIE). Ava Lu enjoyed herself cutting her own pumpkins, sitting on the farm tractors and enjoying a beautiful fall day.

This week we are going to another pumpkin patch with Ava Lu's preschool class - our first field trip! Such fun. I'm looking forward to it.

Girlfriends and Ballet

Ava Lu has had a fun few weeks.

We went to the circus with our dear friends - Melinda, Brian, Eliza, Liam, Maggie & Danielle. Brian, Eliza, Maggie & Liam were here visiting from Georgia. It was great to spend the time with them! You can see the three girls love being friends and have fun together. It warms my heart to see Ava Lu loving people and girlfriends. Those are pinnacles of her mommy's foundation!

And, on Friday, she started her pre-ballet class. It was mostly just movement, twirling, circles and wearing a pretty leotard but Ava Lu loved it! She told me in the car after class "that was fun - really, really fun. "

Ava Lu waited for daddy to come home before taking off her "balledina" outfit. She wanted to be sure he saw her.

Such joy it is to experience the fun and laughter of our dear daughter.

First day of preschool

Today was the first day of Ava Lu's 3 year-old preschool class. She dutifully posed for a few photos after mommy begged - before we went to school.

It's hard to believe she's already going to preschool. I had the "in two years, I'll be taking her to kindergarten" thought after I took her to class this morning. Time does fly and we're working on living for each and every special moment.

She had a good day at school after a little instruction and dialogue from teacher Paula on "kitchen play time." Ava Lu loves to run for the play kitchen when she gets to any school (last year's 2 year old class, Clubhouse at church, etc.) but in her new 3 year old class, the "kitchen isn't open" until after opening activity time and circle time. She'll learn and do very well - I'm sure.

Day #2 tomorrow - we'll see what fun it brings.

Breakfast with Ellie!

While we were in So. Cal, we got together with John, Maria & Ellie for breakfast one morning. This truly was one of our highlights.

John and Maria were in our China travel group and Ellie and Ava Lu are both spicy girls from Chonquing. It was so wonderful to spend time with such dear ones to our heart - we were together with us when we received our beautiful daughters in China and we had such a great time bonding with them in China over the course of our two weeks there. I called Ellie "the Empress" from day 1 and she truly still is "the Empress" - such deep, striking beauty! She's a beautiful, spirited girl. It's wonderful to see her as she grows.

After breakfast, Uncle Robert treated the girls to Cold St*ne Ice Cream. Such fun!

When Ava Lu sees Ellie's pictures, she says, "I love Ellie." They are such cute friends.

Thank you, John, Maria & Ellie, for the breakfast date. It was great to see you and we look forward to more time together in the not-to-distant future.

Fun in So Cal

We made a trip to So Cal to visit my brother. Such fun on the beach, shopping and, of course, spending time with family.

Ava Lu got reacquainted with cousin Nicholas too. They had such fun in the pool and hiding under the barstools at Uncle's house.

And, here she is out to lunch with mommy in Santa Monica on Main! Ava Lu is a great lunch date.

Each day continues to be a joy in experiencing life as Ava Lu's mommy. The more we experience, the more I'm amazed at the gift of motherhood. Sunny So Cal never looked so good.

CA State Fair

A few weeks ago, on opening night (in 100+ temp), we took Ava Lu to the CA State Fair. She enjoyed it so much more this year - it's amazing what a difference the year makes. She rode a pony without clutching for life to our hand, rode several other kiddee rides and had a great time running from fun to fun!

She sure enjoyed using her FUNPASS on all the colorful rides. As she went by on the airplane, helicopter, spaceship, train. . . . she waved and said "hello" to all who would greet her.

Dr. Ava Lu

My brother works for All Heart, a large medial supply and unform company ~ he brought Ava Lu these scrubs when he came to visit a few weeks ago.

Here she is modeling them in her "doctor" outfit the first time she wore them as jammies. Of course, the fact that they have Ariel on them makes them all the better - Ava Lu just LOVES Ariel.

The crazy part about this is particular "doctor story" is that my mom was in the hospital for a week (last week) and Ava Lu now says she wants to be a doctor. This was even before she ate the hospital food delivered to my mom (stew) and said "yum." Who says that about hospital food? Maybe she is destined for a life in the medical center!

Ava Lu makes us laugh each and every day and in the meanime, she now has the right outfit for her hospital life - and really that's all that's important for her to play out her dreams at this time in her life.

Tahoe Fun

We went on our first family vacation with Ava Lu - to Lake Tahoe. It was a week filled with fun and relaxation. Ava LOVED the beach, playing in the sand, riding in the boat with mommy & daddy and just exploring new things. She called the cottage that we stayed in our "little house."

She had her first sailboat ride, first boat/raft ride in the lake, first gondola ride (up 8,200 ft, no less), first movie in the park AND first shopping trip at a art fair. All very much part of what Jim and I enjoy doing in Tahoe - so fun to have our girl with us to carry on the tradition. Ava Lu's excitement for life and the beauty she brings to each new day is truly a blessing!

Sailing in Tahoe

We had a great time celebrating 4th of July with our friends and family.

Dan & Melinda, Josh & Elisia and their families as well as us and our parents enjoyed great food, fun and fireworks! Melinda, as usual, hosted a way-better-than Martha Stewart spread and festive party. Ava Lu had fun swimming in the spa with Danielle. She even her first try at sparklers (mommy was a bit nervous).

Naturally, Ava Lu headed for the spa before I could snap a photo of her in her red & white 4th of July wear. Oh well, we had fun celebrating our country's freedom and Ava's 2nd year in the USA.

June fun

June was a busy month that flew by. Not without some fun and parties though!

Ava Lu "met" Cinderella (affectionately known as "rella") at a play and after party that Nana took Ava and I to in Folsom. As you can see from the pictures she loved wearing her princess dress and meeting another princess. It was too cute!

And, we went to Ava Lu's first tea party - a Lady Bug picnic tea party at a local tea house. How perfect is that? We went with our dear friends as their birthday gift to Ava Lu. It was such a fun time.

All these new experiences are a true joy to share with my daughter. She's now been to a live play and a tea party with real china.

Last Day of School

Last week was Ava Lu's last day of her 2-year old Friday preschool class. She completed her first class with ease :). She loved going every Friday morning to see Miss Paula and her friends Kira, Marshall, Eva and others! So cute to see them all singing, clapping, playing and learning to share (not so cute at times).

We had a party at the park on the last day. Miss Lu rode the merry-go-round again and again and again (is that what you call the push ride at the park? I can't recall). It was such fun seeing how all the children had grown and become little friends in just nine months.

Of course, Ava never misses a chance to play in the sand or water with shovels if she has a chance!

We'll look forward to seeing some of her class friends over the summer in the neighborhood.

Ava Lu turns 3

As sweet as can be, Ava Lu turns 3!

We had a Fun in the Sun party complete with a sprinkler pool and cupcakes. True to form, Ava Lu took a plunge in the pool before I was able to get a posed photo of the b-day girl in her sundress and bow. Oh well.

Here she is in all of her 3-year old glory.

She loved her party with her friends - she told me "mommy, I having fun, party and friends." That's my girl - is there anything better than good people, good food and presents? Didn't think so!

Thanks to those who came to celebrate and those who sent their loving wishes and gifts through the mail. We are always so amazed by the love and support of our family and friends. We know Ava Lu is special to so many!

Mother-Daughter Brunch

We had the blessing of going to a mother-daughter brunch today. Those of you who know me well, know I used to avoid these events like the plague! Oh, those years of thinking "it was never going to happen." I'm so glad that God had a plan far greater than my dreams or hopes.

Ava Lu sure enjoyed the strawberries and all the fun in grandma's beautiful garden.Here are Sammy and Kylie, Ava Lu's cousins. She had fun playing with them and all their attention.
Thank you, Blanca, for taking these pictures to capture the memories of our first mother-daughter event. It will forever be a warm memory of true fulfillment.

Big Girl Bed

We finally transitioned Ava Lu to her "own" big girl bed. The transition was rather smooth given she has not slept in her crib all but 5-7 nights in the last year. She's been sleeping in the spare bedroom queen size bed! So, I finally let go of the crib being in her room and put her twin bed up.

It's great to have her sleeping in her own room beautifully decorated just for her!

And, in celebration of our one year anniversary, we got together with others in our travel group from the Bay Area. How wonderful to see how all the girls have grown. . . and all the happiness and joy in these families' lives. It was a great celebration party. One of our travelmates, Lori, made an amazing slide show of the trip. Once I get a copy of it, I'll post it to our blog. Tears of joy were streaming down my face as I watched it! Here's a photo of the group one year later.

Ava Lu is talking more and more. In fact, she repeats EVERYTHING we say. Watch out! It's fun to hear her begin to articulate her thoughts and feelings. She is truly a joy and gift from God! In fact, this morning she and her daddy were watching the Travel Channel and she came into the bedroom to tell me she wanted to go to the beach. Of course, the beach she saw on TV was in the Bahamas. I told her that I wanted to go as well. So, our likes and desires are already lining up!

One year of bliss with our little Miss!

Today marks the one year anniversary of receiving Ava Lu into our arms. It has truly been a remarkable year of fulfillment, joy and life! Look at our precious daughter now. . . one year later. We love her more than ever and are so thankful for the year of bliss with our little Miss Ava Lu.

We had an "Ava Lu day" celebration tonight with our parents and dear friends. Such joy filled our home as we remember God's goodness and mercy in bringing Ava Lu into our family.

We love you, dear daughter. You are truly born of my heart and fill our arms and home with such love. February 26 will always be our special "Ava Lu day." I am reminded of the scripture in Ephesians, "God can do anything you know -- far more than you could ever imagine or request in your wildest dreams." Each day, Ava Lu, you are fulfillment to God's promise in our life.

O Christmas Tree

Ava Lu's first Christmas Tree! We had such an amazing day going up the hill to cut our tree down with Ava Lu. She remembered the surroundings from our Pumpkin day and thought that's what we were going to do again! It's amazing to see her wonder and excitement with all the newness of the Christmas holiday.

The tree is up - only a few broken ornaments thus far. We're having a joyous December thus far with our precious daughter!

A heart filled with Thanksgiving

Ava Lu doesn't understand Thanksgiving yet but she is freely saying "thank you" when she appreciates something being done for her. Her "thank you's" are often for the simplest little things - a reminder to me to be thankful at all times, even for the small things in life!

As we reflect over 2007, our hearts are filled with thanks. Thanks to God for our dear daughter of promise, thanks to our family and dear friends who have stood by us these last several years on our journey to Ava Lu and thankful to each other for another year of dedication and love.

Here's our Thanksgiving picture as a family. Those of you who know Ava Lu well know that it took many "takes" to get one of her posing for the picture. I'm not giving up - we'll get a good family portrait yet!

Also, you can see Ava Lu enjoyed meeting her cousin Hannah while we were in Nevada for Thanksgiving.

And, Ava Lu even did well with the long drive over the weekend.

Fun at the Pumpkin Patch

Ava Lu picked her first pumpkins. She calls them pumpum. Jim and I started going to this pumpkin patch years ago and always talked about taking our little girl. It was a day of great fun including pumpkin hunting, apple pie and looking at the animals on the little farms in Apple Hill.

We certainly have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving - not the least of which is our little pumpum girl!

Travel Group Halloween Party

We attended a fun Halloween Party with some of our travel group mates in the Bay area on Saturday. Stephen and Christine hosted a wonderful party for the girls and parents.

Six months of blessings!

It's amazing to think that we've had Ava Lu for seven+ months now. We can't imagine life without her. Each day is an adventure and joy. She started gymnastics and is enjoying all the jumping, flipping and running.

One of my favorite times of the day is post-bath with Ava Lu - when she's all wrapped up in her towel. Those moments of snuggling, warmth and looking into her eyes as I hold her so close. It's the best comfort a mom can get.

And, Ava Lu met her first NBA celebrity. She was enthralled with Francisco Garcia at first and made eyes at him all day. . . but we waited until the end of the event to take our picture with him and she was tired, hence she didn't look at the camera and wasn't as thrilled to be in the limelight with a nearly seven-foot star. Oh well, there will be more times for NBA fun and player meetings!

We love Ava Lu more each day and truly look forward to every single minute with our Daughter of Promise.

San Francisco Zoo

Ava Lu had a great time at the SF zoo. She was intrigued by the penguins, grizzly bears, kangaroos and peacocks. That said, I believe her favorite thing was riding the little train through the zoo and waving at all of the people as we passed.

She's truly enjoying life!

First 4th of July

Ava Lu is our dream come true! It was wonderful to celebrate 4th of July for the first time with her. She loved all of the fireworks - in the sky, in the front yard and the star-spangledness of this celebrated American holiday. She just loves her red Radio Flyer wagon. Reunion #1 with travel group

We went to the Bay Area this weekend and had a picnic with some of the families from our travel group. It was so fun to see how the babies had grown in just four months!

It's hard to believe, yes, our Ava Lu is now two. She's growing so much in her exploration and love for life each and every day. We celebrated her birthday with family and friends. She loves the "Happy Birthday" song. We sang it to her for a few weeks leading up to the party so she'd know it during party time.

I'm posting a number of pictures of our joyous times over the last few months - Easter, her first Kings game, Mother's Day, other fun moments, and, of course, on her birthday.

We are more and more in love with our daughter every day. We are so thankful for the blessing of parenting Ava Lu and look forward living life with our beautiful and brilliant two-year old!

We are home

We've been home for more than a week now - time flies when you are having fun! Ava Lu continues to bring us joy and new insight on a daily basis. And. . . we're working on taking naps too. Truly, she is adjusting well and loves her new home.

In the time that we've been home, Ava Lu has been to Fairytale Town, Funderland, the neighborhood park, church and out to lunch and dinner at some of our favorite local restaurants.

It's been great to share Ava Lu with family and friends in person. The reports we've heard is that "pictures don't do her justice." She has an amazing spirit and personality that lights up the room.

We'll plan to update pictures on our blog of Ava Lu so that all can see her latest exploits and adventures.

Last days in China

Hello,

Here are some photos from our last few days in China.

We went out to downtown Guangzhou yesterday and on a Pearl River cruise (it was cold - hence the scarf and hat). Also, we were so happy to have Ava smiling during her bath that we took pictures! You can see that she was the belle of the ball tonight at our farewell dinner party. Is she amazing in her pink outfit? Oh my, she danced her feet off. In fact she cried when it was over and time to leave. She truly was outstanding at the party. Individuals we didn't even know were taking video of her dancing and twirling around. You can see, by the end of the party, her bow is off.

We have our farewell group lunch tomorrow and get Ava's visa, then off to Hong Kong for our last night in Asia. It truly has been a remarkable time. All of my months of holding back the tears have come to an end. Our hearts are full with joy and sentiment. What an amazing journey God has allowed us to take to get our daughter. We wouldn't trade it for the world.

We may be able to post an update from Hong Kong - if not, we'll be in touch after we return home later this weekend.

A ride on a mini airplane and a check-up visit today

Ava Lu had her adoption medical clearance today. She is, as we knew, healthy. I didn't jot down all the notes from the report but I did catch her weight - only 20 lbs, with clothes and shoes on. She's a petite baby girl.

While we were at the Shamian Island (place where the medical clinic is), we shopped, had Starbucks and enjoyed the island. One of the highlights was Ava's first mini airplane carnival ride. She squealed and laughed the whole time. Below are photos from our day.

Tomorrow is a half day of paperwork completion in preparation for our consulate appointment later this week.

All is well here - just enjoying our time together with Ava.

Back in Guangzhou

We made it back to Guangzhou. The USAA China Team is amazing. We really can't say enough about their care and concierge services for us. We just leave our bags outside our hotel room door and they have them picked up, taken to the airport for us and checked in. Then, somehow they arrive outside our room at the next hotel. They truly are a blessing.

Ava slept through the entire plane ride (1.5 hours) - now, how can we repeat that sleep on the 12 hour flight when we come home? Her transition to the new hotel room seems fine. She and I played on the escalators in the lobby at the China Hotel for about 15 minutes - she likes action, motion, lights, color and new experiences. I guess she is truly a "spicy girl" - that's what they call the babies from Chongqing, the Sichuan (spice) region.

Here are some pictures from our last day in Chongqing. You can see that Ava Lu was intrigued by Jim's shoe shine service that he received on the street. Also, Ava is enjoying her first ice cream sundae!

We felt a bit of a tug when we left Chongqing today. I think Jim and I will forever have a love in hearts for that city - the very place where we received our dear daughter!

Going back to Guangzhou

Hello,
We've had a glorious time in Chongqing and really don't want to leave. It's a beautiful city on hills (kind of like San Francisco) with a wonderful feel to it. I'll post more pictures later tonight after we get back to Guangzhou.

Thanks so much for checking in on us. Our Ava Lu is doing well. Pray for our flight to Guangzhou - it will be her first plane ride.

Night out on the town

We wanted to show you all the beautiful pictures from our night out to dinner on the pedestrian mall close to our hotel the other night. The lights are great and festive!

Our day at the zoo and art gallery

Here is Ava starting the day off at breakfast yesterday. She is very independent and likes to feed herself with about three utensils at a time.

After breakfast, we went with the group to the local zoo/park. It made me quite proud of the Sacramento Zoo! We did however see Pandas and a few Tigers. The joy was, of course, watching Ava look at the animals with such intent.

We also went to a local art gallery and had a chinese painting on rice paper made of Ava's Chinese name (Jiang, Mei Yu) made. It was a full day. We ended up at a place called "Hot Pot" for a late lunch. It was a Chinese version of our Melting Pot fondue restaurant, without chocolate course at the end.

Here are a few shots of Ava. She is precious and very much alive! You can see that she liked riding on our shoulders. Will my hair ever look good again??? You know, both my curling iron and flat iron went out here in China.

More Ava

Of course, we want to show you all more pictures of Ava.

We're trying to capture her firsts with us! Here's her first morning after waking up and a bottle in her Minnie Mouse pajamas. Also, here she is after her first morning bath (which she didn't like too much - I stood in the tub to move my feet and splash a little so she'd be happier!). She did love Jim brushing her hair after the bath AND she loved the little red shoes and outfit that we put on her. Her face lit up when Jim showed her the shoes! He said she is a true girl - loves the sparkly pretty things already.

Also, here are pictures from her first trip to the River (Yangtze) and on the bus to Walmart (yes, we went to Walmart as a group to buy stuff we'd need. The Walmart is a bit different and two floors, but still very much Walmart! It is a cross between ours in the states and a super market in Mexico that we went to in the Mayan Riviera).

Thanks for the e-mails and prayers. It so wonderful to know that our family and friends are so excited along with us. We are so glad that you all love her already!

We have Ava!!!!!

Today was the day. Our girl is with us. Words cannot express our emotions and true joy.

I spotted Ava as soon as we walked down the stairs (with our group) going into the Civil Affairs Office to pick up our babies. She was twirling and dancing around with two pigtails in her hair. No one had to point her out to me - I knew it was her. I started crying and crying with joy and amazement. She was the center of attention for the entire time we were at the Civil Affairs Office. She has such a magnetic personality - we're amazed at God's goodness and grace. She is perfect for us. Jim had her laughing while we were hanging out there at the office. She was the only baby laughing. You all know how much we like to laugh in our family!

Here are a few of her pictures. She truly is amazing - I'm not just saying that. One of the ladies in our group at dinner tonight said that if there is a "Miss Congeniality Award" for the group, Ava gets it.

We're in China

We're now in Guangzhou where time with our adoption agency begins tomorrow! We left SFO on Wed, Feb. 21 and were in Hong Kong for a few days. Our hotel in Hong Kong was fabulous - they upgraded us to a suite for free. It was great to see Hong Kong and it was exactly as we pictured - lots of people, TALL buildings, neon lights and shopping galore. We took the tram up to Victoria Peak (you'll see in the pictures) over on Hong Kong Island. What an amazing view of Hong Kong and Kowloon.

Phillip from our agency's China Team met us at the Guangzhou train station (we took the train over from Hong Kong) and had the hotel bus there ready to take all of our luggage - YAY.

Here are a few pictures from our first few days. They are not nearly as exciting as our photos to come on Monday and Tuesday but I wanted to test out loading photos onto Judy's laptop (thanks, Judy, for letting us borrow your laptop for the trip!) and posting them on the blog.

Tea Party Celebration

Oh my, the celebrations and outpouring continues. Today, my dear workmates held a wonderful tea party shower for us (at Kim's beautiful house). All of the planning, food and hostessing put forth for such a special party - wow! We had such a nice time toasting tea to Ava Lu. I even received Ava Lu's very first play tea set, gardening set, barbie doll, teddy bear, chinese outfit and pea coat - so amazingly cute. When I got home, Jim enjoyed seeing all the gifts as I carefully re-opened and displayed each one.

"Thank you" just doesn't seem like I'm saying enough. Our hearts are full with gratitude for the generosity of all the gifts but mostly for the amazing spirit of celebration that is taking place around us in anticipation of meeting our sweet baby girl. I truly am blessed to work with very special people.

Travel Dates!!!!

We received our travel dates a few weeks back. Below is our travel timeline. It's hard to believe our time to get Ava Lu is just around the corner. When will it set in that this is really happening????

Feb. 21 - SFO to Hong Kong
Feb. 22-24 - in Hong Kong
Feb. 24 - train to Guangzhou and arrive at our hotel
Feb. 25 - meet with our agency travel group at the hotel
Feb. 26 - fly to Chongqing & get Ava Lu!!!!
Feb. 26-Mar. 3 - in Chongqing
Mar. 3 - fly back to Guangzhou
Mar. 3-9 - in Guangzhou, finalize paperwork and receive consoluate approval
Mar. 9 - train back to Hong Kong and stay the night
Mar. 10 - Hong Kong to SFO

We appreciate all of the prayers for our safe and amazing journey to China to get Ava Lu. We'll do our best to update our blog while we're there so you can see new pictures of our baby girl.

In fullness of time

Yesterday was the most extraordinary day. My dear friend Melinda hosted the most beautiful shower for me. The theme was In the Fullness of Time. What an honor to celebrate God's fullness of time and to receive amazing gifts for Ava Lu.

The food, decor and company was perfection - truly! I was speechless at the end of opening the very generous, beautiful gifts. Jim and I continue to be amazed at how all of our friends and family have already fallen in love with Ava Lu. We never imagined such celebration and joy. Below are some of the pictures from the day.

Thank you so much to my amazing friends and family for showering us with such blessings of love. We are humbled and amazed that God would give us such fullness with you sharing our joy.

Pooh for Ava Lu

We sent our package off to Ava Lu at the orphanage on Friday. Included in the package is a Winnie the Pooh for Ava Lu, a small photo album with family pictures that we hope her caregivers show her, a disposable camera (that we hope they take pictures of her with while she waits for us over the next month) and a few gifts for her caregivers.

It was so fun to think of sending something to our daughter and truly hope that she receives the items we sent for her.

We do not have any further news on our travel dates yet. We sent all of our Visa paperwork in last week as well. More to come hopefully soon.

Ava Lu's pictures

We received Ava Lu's packet today. It's the best delivery we've ever received. Jim and I could hardly wait to open the FedEx envelope and see our baby girl. Oh my goodness - wait till you see Ava's precious face!

Referral Day!!!!!

We are so excited and can hardly believe the day has come - news about our baby, Ava Lu. We received the call from our agency today and have the referral information on our daughter.

Name: Jiang Mei Yu
From: Dianjianj Social Welfare Institute, Chongqing (picture of the SWI - orphanage is above)
DOB: May 19, 2005
She's been at the Dianjianj SWI since May 20, 2005
Weight in Aug 2006: 16.7 LBS
Height in Aug 2006: 28 inches
She has seven teeth
They say she is a deep sleeper, able to stand, can put blocks in and out of cups, covers the top of bottles with caps, likes to smile and is active (oh no!).

We'll receive our referral packet with photos tomorrow. We'll post them to our site hopefully tomorrow.

Progress on the room

We've made some progress on the room and continue our work to make it just right. The walls are all now painted, the furniture is in and the sewing. . . . well, it continues! Also, all the finishing touches still need to be done - complete the crown moulding, hang the chandelier, hang the drapes and artwork and repaint the ceiling. The room will be complete this month, in time for the arrival of our girl.

You can see from the pictures the progress we've made. It's coming along quite nicely and will be such a warm, cheerful room when it's done.

Christmas in San Francisco!

We were able to go to San Francisco and spend Christmas at Robert's house. It was a great time - we really enjoyed the escape to the City and being with family. And. . . even Ava Lu received some Christmas gifts!

We're looking forward to 2007 and a new year filled with joy, happiness and our gift from China. Our promise from God is this - Prov. 25:25, "Like water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a distant land."

Ava Lu's room

After months of waiting, it was time to start working on Ava Lu's room. I kept telling Jim, "we have plenty of time. We'll have 6-8 weeks after we receive our referral so, if necessary, we can get everything together then."

But, on Labor Day weekend, after months of Jim strongly encouraging me to get going with the vision for our baby girl's room, we went furniture shopping with my parents. After three hours in the baby store, my dad couldn't imagine that I hadn't made up my mind on the crib, dresser and armoire! I promised my parents and Jim that I would go back to the store the following day to place the order with my final decision. And. . . we did, we ordered the furniture on Sept. 4!

Still, we needed to select the paint color and fabric to start the transformation. Weeks later, my mom and I went to Calico Corners with the fabric swatches I had selected in January of this year. The good news is that they were having a sale on fabric, the bad news is that one of the fabrics I had selected was no longer in stock and we couldn't determine the fabric name for order. After going back and forth over the course of the next few days. . . I finally selected all the fabrics and placed the orders. My mom and I (mostly my mom) are sewing now. Photos of Ava Lu's room will soon be posted.

Thanksgiving at the Daly's

I thought I'd add some of our Thanksgiving pictures to our blog from our time with Jim's family at his mom and dad's house this year.

And. . . the day after Thanksgiving, (for the first time in my life) I was out at stores at 5 a.m. - with my sister-in-law, Jennifer and niece Bianca. We were at Best Buy with thousands of others in search of the $379 laptop computer! We found out quickly that we needed to be in line on Thanksgiving Day by 4 p.m. to even have a shot at it - how crazy is that? In spite of the craziness and cold, we had a very fun time together with lots of laughs.

We're all anxiously awaiting the referral of our baby girl. Cousins, Danielle and Bianca can hardly wait to have another girl in the family!

We are nearing the end of our wait to receive our referral and to travel to China for our baby girl, Ava Lu. We are excited, nervous and anxious all at the same time. We know that our lives will never be the same!

Our "official" journey to Ava Lu started in March 2004 when I said to my husband Jim after yet another fertility doctor visit, "What if God's plan for our life is to offer hope to a child who wouldn't have hope otherwise." We know that God firmly placed this thought, dream and hope into our hearts on that day in March. I'd like to say that our road from that point forward was without bumps, questions and delays, but that is not the case. Our journey been long but we have not given up hope and look forward to the fulfillment of this promise, dream and plan of God! We know that He is faithful.

For this child I prayed and the Lord has granted my petition. I Sam 1:27
